Dee Carolus Sproll

A resident of the beautiful mountainous region of East Tennessee, my views and interpretation of art have been shaped by my educational background, extensive travel and visits to many treat museums here and abroad.

I received a M.A. in Art History from Hunter College, New York City, in 1981 and am now a member of the faculty at King College, Bristol, TN.

My travels took me through North America, Central and South America and Europe, where I had the opportunity to study and absorb different arts and cultures and their diverse influences.  Of particular interest have been Pre-Columbian art, medieval manuscripts, Northern Renaissance painting, and among 20th century painters, Henri Matisse, Howard Hodgkin and Morris Louis.

I have been painting for more than 20 years and for the past 10 years more or less fulltime, selling my works on Long Island, Upstate New York, Tennessee and Virginia at art fairs, exhibitions at restaurants art guilds, and liberal arts colleges.

I have gained the confidence to experiment with even bolder designs, particularly for my sculptured canvases.  My three-dimensional, free-form wood sculptures are hand-crafted, concision of varying pitched planes creating movement and a different view from every angle.  Some are blended with intricate convex/concave formations ranging from 1" to 3" in depth.  Partially in reaction to the ascetic art on view in the 80's and 90's, I felt a great need to use vivid colors in bold juxtapositions to bring out and emphasize the shapes and movement o my canvases.  From my extensive experience I feel that my paintings are truly unique because they represent a fusion of sculptural elements and paint to form painted sculpture for the wall, or sculptured paintings.
